The Contemporary Love Poet as a Story Teller
Throughout the course of history there have been contemporary love poets who are famous as poetic story tellers. The same is still true today, as contemporary love poets continue to spin their yarns for others. Perhaps contemporary love poetry could be regarded as a whole, or as one long story with many key characters and events, depicted by contemporary love poets, throughout the ages.
The realities and fantasies of different eras are often passed on through stories found in oral tradition, sometimes penned in rhyme, at other times put to music, or written as various genres of poetic verse.
Some of the best poetic stories come from contemporary love poet's own personal experiences, particularly those involving intense emotions, like those known by lovers. But love has its dark side too, and stories about the agony of lost love are repeated throughout different eras, as well as those expressing the full gamut of joy the contemporary love poet knows and experiences, as his or her reality.
Many children's stories are told by contemporary love poets in poetic form. Children relate well to rhythm and rhyme, and adding a story line poetically, tends to serve as a learning tool for them. Many of these stories are passed on from generation to generation, and are loved by children and adults alike.
Stories that are written in different poetic genres often record the events of different eras historically, including those of tragedies like war, or natural disasters. They may recount the successes of heroes and heroines, as well as the failures of those who tried unsuccessfully to effect historical change. Contemporary love poets also address the lives and times of those who played rebel, with or without a cause, in poetic story form.
Fact and fiction, intertwined with reality and non-reality in poetic form, forces its readers and critics to think, experience emotionally and become acutely aware of the tremendous power of contemporary love poetry in every era.
Should the contemporary love poet of any era be accorded recognition as a story teller, as opposed to mere recognition as a contemporary love poet? For those who suggest it is unrealistic, the reality is there.
Throughout the eras, knowingly or unknowingly, contemporary love poets have been story tellers, recounting the story of truth poetically, in each era. At times, the voice of the contemporary love poet is the only voice that speaks truth in story form.
Do contemporary love poets plan to tell stories and thus, become known as story tellers?
Perhaps some contemporary love poets recognize the appropriateness of poetic story telling, and see story telling as a tool for writing contemporary love poetry. In reality, when a contemporary love poet is writing on inspiration, the contemporary love poetry may or may not take on story form.
Story telling in contemporary love poetry is limitless in scope, depending upon the literary and creative skills of the contemporary love poet.
What is the real story line in any piece of contemporary love poetry? Perhaps it is the story of humankind, written poetically for history's sake. Mankind has the ability to be a story teller, so why would a contemporary love poet not have that gift also?
