How to Write Contemporary Love Poetry

How to write contemporary love poetry can seem mysterious at best, particularly to a new poet. In fact, the word contemporary may appear very foreboding to a would-be love poet and the title contemporary love poet, as beyond his or her level of comprehension or understanding. He or she does not want to categorize his or her love poetry, rather simply to write when inspired to do so.

The contemporary love poet also desires to write love poetry in whatever manner is the most feasible and practical to him or her at that moment in time. He or she does not want to risk being labeled in any way, as labels are not necessarily always accurate. In fact, many are incorrect, simply erroneous or inappropriate, the result of a misguided, faulty or otherwise defective perception.

At the same time, labels have the potential to sway a contemporary love poet from his or her channel of inspirational thought. They may influence or obligate him or her to head in a certain direction within the context of his or her work.

Realistically, when used in conjunction with love poetry, the word contemporary is never something to be feared. Consider it from this perspective.

No one can write in the past as such, nor can anyone write in the future, so a potential love poet can only write in the here and now of the present.

Thus, the current era is always the era of the contemporary love poet, (unless one is delving into the contemporary era of a poet from an historical perspective. In his or her own time, he or she would have been regarded by others as being a contemporary poet, as well.)

Writing love poetry in the present, means penning it when inspired to do so. Contemporary love poetry cannot flow until there is inspiration to write it. In other words, the current era of inspiration is the time for a love poet to write his or her love poetry.

'Write it now', is the message received in the urgency of poetic inspiration.

The word contemporary implies the freedom to write whatever, whenever, or wherever in the present, without the hindrances of excess baggage of the past, or imaginary burdens of the future. The concept of contemporary discards, ignores or otherwise casts away previous stifling inhibitions, thus allowing the freedom of expression appropriate for the current era.

There are no hard and fast rules for writing contemporary love poetry. What is of primary importance is that it is written, no matter how awkward and stilted it seems initially. Writing love poetry which does not seem to flow properly may seem difficult at first, but as inspiring new thoughts are documented in some way, other exciting and stimulating thoughts along with fresh ideas begin to surface, as well.

Writing contemporary love poetry can seem just as frustrating as trying to become acquainted initially, when there is someone with whom you have fallen in love. It can seem to be extremely awkward and embarrassing, as self-disclosure is never easy. Bearing one's soul to another is not easy. It becomes easier with practice and time, as does writing contemporary love poetry.

Love that is meant to be cannot be stifled, at least not for long. It is contemporary in its very nature and much like a phoenix, the new flame that arises from the cinders of a former fire. Somehow, it has a spark that kindles its new flame. Its spirit lives on.

In contemporary love poetry, the use of modern day or current words and timely expressions begin to cast new light on even seemingly timeless topics of old, as well as brand new ones that suddenly appear on the horizons of the continually expanding literary world.

At times and quite mysteriously, the same new thoughts may appear on the horizon in totally different parts of the world, but that is not a new phenomenon. This is something  that has happened since the beginning of time. It reveals a oneness of thought, or a unity of spirit and heralds, as well as confirms an inevitable change that cannot be refuted or denied.

It may also introduce new knowledge which is an important part of contemporary love poetry, as one new idea leads to another and then another, like building blocks that when placed together have significance of merit.

In conclusion it must be suggested that how to write contemporary love poetry is something that each poet must discover for him or herself, as inspired to do so.
