Music and Its Expression in Contemporary Love Poetry

Some might argue that music has no place in contemporary love poetry, while others may argue exactly the opposite, but there is no doubt that music and love poetry have walked hand in hand since the beginning of time and that includes the present era.

Contemporary love poetry can go virtually unnoticed in its own era, even when it is put to music, or be forgotten in later eras. Yet some melodies may continue to reverberate throughout different eras, without any significant acknowledgment of the contemporary love poetry who originally inspired them. The reverse is also true as the melodies might have been forgotten, but not the words of the contemporary love poet.

The words of the contemporary love poet may be changed from era to era, but the same is true of the music. Contemporary love poetry often inspires new music and the introduction of new music can inspire new contemporary love poetry. Contemporary love poetry has within it the power of rhythm and rhyme that can instigate new music.

Nature itself speaks poetically through the winds and waves with the same kind of rhythm. The contemporary love poet is blessed with the gift of being sensitive enough to hear it, as well as having the gift of being able to express it in words.

Love has its own unique musical aspect with its various modes of expression. The contemporary love poet cannot suppress that which brings about music that surfaces in conjunction with whoever, or whatever he loves. Romantic love triggers the writing of contemporary love in every era. New music burst forth in words and melodies when two people fall in love.

Music composed in conjunction with contemporary love poetry can be extremely complex or very simple in nature. Contemporary love poetry can also be complex or simple. Each has the potential to give and sustain life to the other.

Every era of contemporary love poetry documents music as being part of its literary history. Times changes, but music is always there, whether it is in the past or the present. The horizons of musical expression continue to expand in conjunction with contemporary love poetry, and contemporary love poetry expands its own horizon in conjunction with music over time.

Culture in any era is often reflected in its contemporary love poetry. The soul of the contemporary love poet sings when inspired to do so. Similarly, the words and expressions of the contemporary love poet appear on the horizon of time in conjunction with the music accorded to it.
