Rights of a Contemporary Love Poet
The contemporary love poet in any era has rights, indisputable rights, at least from a moral, ethical and legal perspective. Unfortunately, there are always those who choose not to operate under these kinds of principles, at least not in terms of their actual practice, but the nature of man has not changed either. Some men are inherently good while others are not.
Thus, it is possible that contemporary love poetry may be absconded by others during any era, including the present one, if others choose to claim ownership to it. When there are questions of ownership, moral, ethical and legal disputes can arise. In other words the question of who is the rightful owner surfaces.
Morally, ethically and legally, the contemporary love poet always owns his or her contemporary love poetry. What happens with it remains to be seen. The lack of integrity by others is often rooted in their own inability to write contemporary love poetry of their own. Whether the reason for stealing the work of others is greed, monetary gain, fame or whatever, they are somehow motivated to try to assume the ownership of original contemporary love poetry of others, but in a contemptible manner.
What can a contemporary love poet faced with this kind of a situation do? The contemporary love poet of the present can only act in the present. Unfortunately, the contemporary love poet of the past cannot do anything, as it is too late. His or her benefactors may claim inheritance rights.
Fortunately, truth always prevails in a world where love is always more potent than non-love. Non-love with deception is invariably fatal for the deceiver in time, and is highly likely to be exposed when the truth is uncovered or discovered.
In the realm of love, truth is revealed.
Should contemporary love poets stop writing because their contemporary love poetry may be stolen, or otherwise absconded by others? No.
Those in other eras may attempt to claim the contemporary love poetry of previous eras and try to make it their own, as well. That too may be discovered in time. When anyone takes a piece of contemporary love poetry and revises it, the original poetry does not belong to him or her, although he or she may claim ownership of the revised work.
Publishers of contemporary love poetry may inadvertently make the claim of being the original writers, as well. Even academics may try to incorporate the contemporary love poetry of others into their work and claim it as theirs.
A sincere and honest inquiry into copyright is always advisable for any contemporary love poet who desires recognition for his or her contemporary love poetry. In the meantime, a contemporary love poet always owns his or her contemporary love poetry.
